Captain Donnel is heading up a mission to the star Pollux.....a journey taking 30 light years. Once they arrive, they have one year to explore to system and make contact with any life forms they encounter. There is only one problem: once they get there, they discover that Pollux has completely disappeared!

Captain Philip Donnel (space ship pilot); Bob Hatch (language expert); Lieutenant James Murtha (engineer, death); Sandor Mannershmitt (inventor of the space time overdrive, mention only)
Captain Donnel is assigned the duty of traveling to the star Pollux, a 30 year travel distance, in order to study the star's solar system, which is supposedly very much like the Earth's solar system. However, due to the distance and time involved, Donnel and his crew will be considerably older after the mission and may not return......alive. They have a surprise awaiting them upon landing.

Two archaeologists uncover a large, smooth object, looking very much like a building block, that is covered with etched inscriptions on five of its six sides, which are later translated by Marvin. To their surprise, the block proves to be a diary of an alien boy who stole a spaceship on his planet 14 Centuries before.
