Fully Loaded: 10 Of The Most Powerful Weapons In Movies (And 10 That Are Actually Weak)
Wednesday, November 14th, 2018, 7:11 AM GMT
Throughout film history, heroes and villains alike have wielded some truly powerful weapons. Whether they are guns, swords, or any other kind of object that can do a person harm, they often become an integral part of the story in which they are featured. Some of these weapons are truly powerful. They're the kind of thing that offers up a true challenge to the hero, giving them insurmountable odds to overcome. Other times, they are something that when wielded by the right person, someone true of heart and spirit, can take down an evil force and restore peace to the world. Either way, they are often impressive, memorable, and good for merchandising purposes.

15 Hidden Spoilers We Missed At The Start Of Superhero Shows And Films
Wednesday, November 14th, 2018, 6:11 AM GMT
Foreshadowing is a fun way for creators to hint at where their stories will go. Even if those hints go over the audience's head, planting the seed in our subconscious makes the eventual reveal all the more satisfying because it fulfills an established expectation. It's a device that's used a lot in superhero media where protagonists are usually forced to deal with the consequences of the life they've chosen to lead, whether it's a supervillain of their own inadvertent creation or their good intentions only making a situation worse. Post-credit scenes, or "The Stinger," at the very end of a movie, openly tease what's to come in the next installment of a series, like Batman being passed a Joker playing card in Batman Begins, or Thanos' "I'll do it myself," line in Avengers: Age of Ultron.

Thor: 20 Most OP Things Marvel's God Of Thunder Has Ever Done
Wednesday, November 14th, 2018, 3:11 AM GMT
It’s only natural that the first-born son of the All-Father grew into such a formidable force in the Marvel Universe. In fact, given that Thor Odinson was born to “surpass” Asgard’s power, it was also destiny. He already got off to a great start in life by virtue of being Asgardian, a race of god-like beings whose physiology gives them greatly enhanced strength, speed, endurance and slower aging. But Thor is something special; a god among gods. Not just any warrior can survive an attack from a Celestial, split planets from the force of a punch or bench press a serpent so large it can wrap itself around Earth.

Defending Detective Pikachu's Controversial Pokémon Designs
Wednesday, November 14th, 2018, 1:11 AM GMT
With the release of the first Detective Pikachu trailer came a myriad of mixed reactions, a majority no doubt stemming from the designs of the Pokémon, which take their in-game appearances and add photo-realistic textures and other "real-life" details. The designs were polarizing, to say the least, some finding them fitting for the tone and approach of the film, while others have found the hyper-realistic Pokémon to be disturbing, artless or just plain bad, writing the look off as yet another Hollywood adaptation of a cartoon that simply adds realistic textures to the mix because it can.

Animation Domination: 10 Animated DC Films Better Than Anything On The Big Screen (And 10 That Are Worse)
Wednesday, November 14th, 2018, 1:11 AM GMT
The Worlds of DC films have had its ups and downs. In fact, it mostly had its downs, with fans and critics reacting to the films with a shrug at best and vehement disgust at worst. The films, which include Man of Steel, Suicide Squad, and Wonder Woman are often a mixed bag in terms of quality, and they never seem to coalesce in the way that the MCU films do. However, there are still DC fans hoping for big changes as the movies head into a new phase of filmmaking. Aquaman and Shazam appear to be offering more fun, action-packed outings, while the limited glimpses of Wonder Woman 1984 seem to indicate a sequel that will deal with some interesting historical material from that era. That being said, one section of DC's filmmaking branch that is typically overlooked is their often excellent animated films.

How Stan Lee Catapulted Superheroes into the American Mainstream
Wednesday, November 14th, 2018, 12:11 PM GMT
As hard as it may be to believe now, there was a period in American superhero comics when the genre and medium as a whole was written off as little more than children's literature and World War II-era propaganda. Nowadays, superhero films earn billions of dollars at the worldwide box office, comic book conventions pack in hundreds of thousands of fans and Marvel's heroes and villains are the backbone of the most recognizable brands on Earth. The dividing line between the period of superheroes in the mainstream and the genre being dismissed and forgotten by the general public is Stan Lee.

10 Mutants Mystique Actually Respects (And 10 She Would Start A Fight With)
Wednesday, November 14th, 2018, 12:11 PM GMT
Marvel has painted its Merry Mutants with broad strokes of grey. The "worst-of-the-worst," Magneto, was written as a tragic character who really believed his violent way was the only way to save his fellow mutants. The "best-of-the-best," Professor Charles Xavier, turned out (over time) to be manipulative and dangerous, even as he preached that mutants needed to be better than the humans who feared them. In the comics of the last ten years, Cyclops became proof that even the biggest boy scouts of mutants can be corrupted, eventually taking a militaristic approach as leader of the team. But when it comes to Mystique, she has lived on that gray line her entire life -- she always wore her ambiguity on her sleeve.

Ralph Breaks the Internet is a Solid Sequel with an Amazing Message
Wednesday, November 14th, 2018, 12:11 PM GMT
Ralph Breaks the Internet continues Disney's current trend of solid sequels. It manages to balance its own considerable nostalgia factor with fresh story developments, and those new developments involve a well-executed discussion of friendship and how it evolves, not to mention a decidedly un-preachy moral on the dangers of external validation. It also doesn’t hurt that the film boasts the biggest gathering of Disney Princesses ever seen on screen, complete with original voice actors. The new characters introduced aren't all as memorable as Vennelope or Ralph (or even Fix-It Felix and Calhoun), but most of them make for welcome additions to Ralph’s now very crowded world. And anytime the movie hits a lull, there’s a dense basket of Easter Eggs to spy, not to mention their characteristically clever presentation of the Internet as a whole along with many of its individual components. There’s always something interesting to shift your focus to if and when the film lags, which it does here and there.

Robin: 5 Reasons Dick Grayson Is The Best, 5 Why It’s Tim Drake, And 5 Why It’s Actually Jason Todd
Wednesday, November 14th, 2018, 10:11 AM GMT
Robin is arguably the most iconic sidekick in comic book history -- it helps that his mentor is Batman, a pop culture legend. In every medium, Batman and Robin have experienced countless classic adventures together. Given the Boy Wonder’s fame, many fans wonder who the best Robin is, but this question is practically impossible to answer. Most fans will have a definitive favorite, which is why the question is fairly controversial. Each (main) Robin has been a successful sidekick; they all bring a unique flavor to the role (yes, even Jason Todd). It’s hard to accurately evaluate each and every Robin as some of them didn’t hold the role for very long and others are still relatively new to it.

10 Last Minute Changes That Saved The X-Men Movies (And 10 That Hurt Them)
Wednesday, November 14th, 2018, 9:11 AM GMT
Raise your hand if you remember the 1995 film Waterworld. At the time, production costs got completely out of hand and it ballooned to become the most expensive film of all time, clocking in at around $175 million. Nowadays, studios spend those amounts willingly, with the 2017 film Justice League estimated to cost around $300 million and the 2011 film Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides is considered the most expensive movie to date at around $379 million. Waterworld was expensive due to such things as sets having to be rebuilt after being destroyed by a hurricane. Solo: A Star Wars Story was expensive due to massive reshoots after the directors were replaced by Ron Howard. Shall we talk about the cost of digitally removing Henry Cavill's mustache in Justice League? Yeah, let's not.

20 Marvel What If? Stories Better Than What Actually Happened
Tuesday, November 13th, 2018, 7:11 AM GMT
In the worlds of Marvel's What If?, anything is possible. Starting in 1977, the anthology series has explored the countless alternate realities of Marvel's multiverse on a semi-regular basis. Usually, each issue of What If? was ostensibly built around a single question like "What If Spider-Man's Uncle Ben Had Lived?" or "What If Storm Had the Power of the Phoenix?" Ranging from hopeful to heart-breaking, these comics have twisted familiar characters and storylines in strange new directions. While these stories reward readers' knowledge of Marvel lore, they also provide approachable one-off stories where creators have followed their wildest impulses. Since each of these stories were more or less contained to their own alternate reality, What If? has been one of the few truly unpredictable series where beloved characters and entire planets perished on a disturbingly regular basis. Every issue of What If? could be the end of the world or the birth of a new one.

Tuesday, November 13th, 2018, 6:11 AM GMT
Who doesn’t love the Merc with a Mouth? He’s funny, iconic and, most importantly, deadly. Deadpool has been a popular character among comic lovers for years, but his popularity has clearly improved since the release of the films. He’s certainly changed how the general public sees comic book films by breaking some serious barriers for something so often considered a “children's hobby". There's something special about Deadpool that makes audiences gravitate towards him, and it’s not just that he’s an anti-hero. Part of what makes him so recognizable is his clear and obvious look -- the red suit and black circles around white eyes is something most people wouldn't confuse with anyone else. If you haven’t been keeping up with the Deadpool comics, or you’ve only seen the films, you might be surprised to know that Deadpool actually has a couple of suit variations. There have been a couple looks that the Merc has tried on, as well as dozens of variations for Deadpool that came out of alternate timelines.

Stan Lee Spoke Out Against Bigotry, Again And Again
Tuesday, November 13th, 2018, 4:11 AM GMT
News of the passing of comic book industry titan Stan Lee is still rippling through the world, with his family, friends, colleagues and everyone touched by his work flooding the Internet with heartfelt tributes. The legacy of a man who helped create some of the most iconic characters in pop culture is a hard thing to quantify in words -- other than perhaps his own, which are what many are taking solace in this week. Comics are primarily a visual medium, but under the bright colors and punchy graphics, they're driven by literary sources and ideas, and the Marvel legend never let us forget that.

Beast Mode: The 20 Most Powerful Monster-Forms Of Comics Characters
Tuesday, November 13th, 2018, 4:11 AM GMT
Whether you're fighting zombies or trying to play a civil game of Mario Party, those who hunt beasts are likely to become beasts themselves. Transforming from a normal fleshy form to monstrous reflection of one's former self is a staple of comics – it's kinda the Hulk's whole premise for one, and Dr. Jekyll/Mr. Hyde is both a Marvel and a DC super-villain. Since we're still in a Halloweenie mood, we've scoured our long boxes to find 20 characters who perform a Transylvania Twist of their own to turn into great and terrible beasts. To qualify for this listicle, characters in question had to have a monstrous alternate form, no matter the means of transmogrification.

REVIEW: Origin Delivers Entertaining B-Movie-Style Sci-Fi
Tuesday, November 13th, 2018, 3:11 AM GMT
A group of strangers wake up in an unfamiliar environment, not sure how they got there or who the other people are. Before they can get their bearings, they’re thrown into unexplained danger, and must fight to survive even as they’re discovering what led them to this predicament. It’s a pretty familiar sci-fi set-up, and the new YouTube Premium series Origin (premiering November 14) doesn’t reinvent the formula. But the first two episodes are still pretty entertaining, with a pulpy tone and a relentless pace that moves the story forward significantly just by the end of the second episode.

An eXtended Universe: 10 X-Men Castings We Hope The MCU Keeps (And 10 We Hope They Don't)
Tuesday, November 13th, 2018, 3:11 AM GMT
After years of negotiating and strategizing, the X-Men are finally going to make it into the MCU. How and when they will be integrated is anyone's guess, but with Marvel seemingly making plans to throw them in, it's only a matter of time before we see mutants and Avengers working together on the big screen. With a major shift in universe, there will likely be some changes when the X-Men are placed into the MCU. A tonal shift will probably be in place, but we'd also wager that Marvel would take the time to do some even greater changes. Having rebooted franchises before (regardless of how recently their franchises had been going), there's a strong possibility that we could see some new X-Men. Characters like Mystique, Cyclops, and Beast could have entirely new faces when they're fighting alongside Spider-Man and Black Panther.

20 Marvel Knights Comics That Define Heroes
Tuesday, November 13th, 2018, 1:11 AM GMT
The year was 1998. Titanic had won no fewer than 37 Academy Awards, the Y2K virus was busy getting ready to hurl us back into the Stone Age, and crab cake fever swept the nation. Amidst all of this, a funnybook publisher of some repute, Marvel Comics, was losing a lot of money. That’s right, kids, the very same company that has grossed several ka-jillion dollars with its film franchise was at its lowest point 20 years ago. The comic book speculation boom, which brought the world some of the finest and most well-remembered hologram covers in history, had finally busted. Comic book publishers across the country began shutting down like Cyborg in Amish country, and Marvel, bloodied but unbowed, made one final hail-mary: Marvel Knights.

Off-Target: 20 Huge Changes The Arrowverse Made That Annoy Only The Realest DC Comics Fans
Tuesday, November 13th, 2018, 12:11 PM GMT
Comic book fans can be a picky bunch. At this point, after decades of every piece of Marvel and DC continuity being dissected by fans and every minor change in a character's story or costume being picked apart, it's obvious that comic book devotees take this stuff very seriously. This has extended into the realm of film and television, with every adaptation being studied by fans for its reverence (or lack thereof) for the source material. When bringing a comic book to the screen, sometimes filmmakers are able to translate elements entirely faithfully. After all, movies like Zack Snyder's Watchmen and 300 feel like exact translations of the source comics, with entire passages of dialogue relayed verbatim and shots that 100% recreate iconic panels. But, on the other hand, sometimes changes need to be made in order to translate a comic into the different medium, as some things simply wouldn't look good on screen when played out by actors. Perhaps the best example of this is the original X-Men movies changing the team's traditional yellow and blue costumes to uniform black leather.

25 Redeeming Aspects of Disliked Superhero Movies
Tuesday, November 13th, 2018, 10:11 AM GMT

For every great superhero movie, there's a terrible one. Marvel Studios has changed the game with the (mostly) consistent quality of their superhero films, but prior to the MCU's creation, there wasn't much of a standard on how to make a good superhero film, with only a few standing out as great adaptations. Even after the MCU hit its stride, there were still a good number of bad superhero movies coming out each year. In fact, you could easily argue that since the MCU spawned the superhero movie boom, it was indirectly responsible for studios churning out superhero movies that were critical and financial failures in order to compete with Marvel.
