Lois, Clark, and Jimmy watch "Superman: A Retrospective" 68 years after Superman's arrival, commenting on several things wrong. Luthor is cleared of all charges, but the people have lost respect for him and he resents it. Dr. Abernathy experiments with Kryptonite on animals; one escapes and causes an explosion that turns Abernathy into a Kryptonite Man. Clark summons Supergirl, who defeats the Kryptonite Man. Luthor's goons take Clark to Luthor, who tells him "No more stories", threatens Lois, and punches Clark out. Luthor leaves a bloodied Clark behind, who has obviously lost his powers.

Toyman, in a Superman robot shell, visits Luthor, who shows him the sunstone crystal he recovered from the fortress. Clark tells Lois of his confrontation with Luthor and his lack of powers for the past year. Later, during a cell phone call, he finds a hideout off Track 13 of the Metropolis subway. Former Luthor henchmen are stealing armor and attack him. Clark is saved by Green Lantern and Hawkgirl, who had been on the phone call. An attacker tries to destroy a train, but Clark stops him. Luthor meets Metallo. Hawkgirl and Green Lantern return Clark home, offering him a Green Lantern ring.

Luthor and Toyman use the Kryptonite Man to focus a Kryptonite cannon to the center of the Earth, where it contacts something via the sunstone crystal. It responds and moves upward. Clark is attacked by Neutron and Radion for his exposes. Neutron blasts Clark, but it doesn't seem to hurt him. He is knocked down on subway tracks and hit by a train. Superman recalls losing his powers at the end of the Infinite Crisis. Returning to his fight against Livewire, Silver Banshee, Bloodsport, and Riot, he realizes his mental abilities have also increased. He defeats the villains, returns to the Daily Planet as Clark, but leaves abruptly. Kryptonian crystals start erupting from the ground. As Superman rescues people from them, Luthor realizes the crystals are coming from a spaceship that was buried at the Earth's core. He uses the Sunstone to override the ship's command, and enters it. It rises above Metropolis, where Superman confronts it.
