Tony takes his newest date, Marion, to the circus. When the wild animals escape, he rounds them up as Iron Man. His grey armor scares the onlookers. Marion suggests that a golden metal might make him look more heroic. A golden Iron Man then battles Gargantus, who turns out to be a mighty robot built by aliens. Iron Man defeats Gargantus by hurling three magnets at him. The magnets float around the robot, ripping its body to pieces. Iron Man then throws the magnets at a flying saucer he just spotted. The aliens flee and, next day, Tony has another date with Marion.

Pepper and Happy, unsettled by Tony Stark's disappearance, go to Iron Man and tender their resignations. The following day, Happy, playing detective, breaks in to Stark's home. Tony is wearing his armor but not his helmet. He conceals his armor by jumping into bed. He assures Happy that all is well and that Iron Man should be trusted. The Mandarin uses his giant space-laser to destroy much of Stark's factory. He seemingly kills Stark. Stark as Iron Man disguises himself as a bearded man in a large coat, and boards a plane for China. He confronts Koto, the Mandarin's robot, and is defeated.

Iron Man is a prisoner of the Mandarin, held fast to a giant wheel by concentrated titanium bonds, Mandarin proceeds to relate his origin. The Mandarin then declares his intentions to conquer the world and to "spin" Iron Man to death. The Mandarin leaves, not realizing that the spinning wheel is recharging Iron Man's armor, like a bicycle wheel recharges a small generator. Iron Man then thwarts Mandarin's world-domination plan by disrupting a Chinese missile launch and then redirecting the missile back to China. They fight until the Chinese turn up, branding Mandarin a traitor. Mandarin flees.

The Dream-Maker (formerly Count Nefaria) creates hallucinations ("dreams") in which Iron Man must battle some of his former enemies in his sleep. Iron Man then travels to Ireland in pursuit of an unhappy Happy, who walked off in a huff last issue. The Dream-Maker continues to torment Iron Man. Iron Man battles bravely and a ranting Dream-Master feels he must add more power to his machine. This results in a short-circuit which causes the machine to explode. The Freak turns back into Happy, but loses his memory. Senator Byrd, with a police escort, serves Stark with a subpoena and orders him to go with them to Washington. Pepper is disgusted at Stark's casual attitude and seeming lack of concern for Happy. Enter the Mandarin, who drives off some invading Chinese soldiers and, at the same time, abducts Stark on his way to a court hearing by means of a teleportation device. Mandarin dumps Stark's briefcase into the moat of his castle, in case it contains an explosive device, and then prepares to unleash Ultimo, his greatest creation.

The Mandarin unleashes his Ultimo robot and then tries to kill Tony Stark. Stark is saved by his protective chest device which has served as a shock-proof vest. He dives into the moat to retrieve his brief case containing his Iron Man armor. An enraged Ultimo routs the invading Chinese soldiers from last issue. Iron Man, hopelessly outmatched, tries to stop the giant robot's rampage. Senator Byrd, believing that Stark showed contempt of Congress by not showing up for his court hearing, closes down Stark Industries.

Part 1 of 3. The Avengers were apparently off fighting Power Man & The Swordsman during this story, as shown in THE AVENGERS #29 (June 1966). Warlord Krang plot continues from TALES TO ASTONISH #81 (July 1966), even though that issue probably came out a week or two after this one. Because of Stark's problems with the law, SHIELD was forced to seek other sources of weapons & technology, seen in STRANGE TALES #146-149 (July-October 1966).

Black and white. Artwork is for Tales of Suspense #42 (June 1963) but copy is from Tales of Suspense #41 (May 1963). It is unclear whether this unusual piece of artwork is simply a mix-up, or whether the name "Dr. Strange" was simply swapped-out for the story which eventually saw print as issue #41.
