Eben; Alicia (Eben's daughter, death); unnamed British sailor (Alicia's seaman lover, death)
A storm breaks out, causing heavy winds whipping up sand from Barnegat Beach along the Atlantic Coast, and causing Eben annoyance, were it not for his trusty whale-oil lantern to guide him to his hut and his precious daughter, Alicia. The American Revolution was still on-going and her lover has disappeared, possibly into the hands of the enemy. Slyly, Eben used his lantern to guide a British onto the rocks and its destruction. The next morning, Alicia and Eben searched the wreckage for needed supplies. Alicia spotted a body of a man washed up on the beach: her missing sailor.
