A mysterious warrior (never referenced by name in the series) is confronted by seven men as he enters a quiet border town. The lone warrior swiftly dispatches most of the attackers and the rest flee. Seeing the warrior's prowess, Retlaw offers him gold if he will return a girl claimed to have been taken by a rival wizard named Elias. The warrior offers his services to Elias as protection for the girl, but Retlaw discovers his betrayal.
