Frustrated trying to sell barbed wire in Texas (1877), John Gates makes and wins large bets on the product's usefulness, resulting in huge orders. When his boss refuses a raise John forms his own company and breaks the Elwood-Glidden patents. Ruined by fire, he starts again, then moves into running steel companies. He finally forms a steel and wire company with $90,000,000 in capitalization.
