Chester Martin worked on the Planet Stories pulp where he did three covers and several interior illustrations. Robert Barrett made the connection between the pulp illustrations and the Futura comic book style.

Later SF author Ron Goulart was the first to make this connection, in 1946. See for an extensive biography.
