Notes: Reprints 124 daily newspaper comics strips originally published between December 27th 1971 and June 27th 1972.

Garry Trudeau’s original editor at Holt, circa 1972, was Don Hutter (Walker 2010, 128). And Trudeau’s editor in 1981 was Hutter (Walker 2010, 95), evidently until Hutter’s promotion to editor-in-chief (New York Times 1981). GCD’s editing credit reflects the assumption that Hutter was Trudeau’s editor at Holt continuously between 1972 and 1981.

Notes: Much of this material reprinted in a different format in Bravo for Life’s Little Ironies (A Doonesbury Book) (Popular Library, 1973 Series) #[nn] and I Have No Son (A Doonesbury Book) (Popular Library, 1973 Series) #[nn].

Garry Trudeau acknowledged employing Don Carlton as inker of Doonesbury (Alter 1990). Newspaper publication of Carlton’s work began “in early December [1971]”; Carlton initially lettered the strip for only a few weeks before Trudeau resumed lettering the strip. After about a year of Carlton inks and Trudeau letters, Trudeau again delegated lettering to Carlton, and the arrangement endured for decades (Walker 2010, 30–31). GCD’s letters credits reflect that the time period covered by this volume appears to begin during the “few weeks” of Carlton’s initial inking and lettering stint, and appears to end during the year in which Trudeau lettered and Carlton inked.
