Jeff; Laurie; Steve; Margo
Jeff and Laurie are fellow art students, although Jeff is irresponsible and his older brother Steve doesn’t think he’s serious about his studies. Laurie takes a part-time job in a department store when Jeff squanders his inheritance money, then discovers Jeff is cheating on her with Margo. They argue and Jeff falls out of a window and is left paralysed. Steve and Laurie take the bitter Jeff to Steve’s ranch. When Steve and Laurie fall in love, Jeff tries to shoot them but mortally wounds himself instead.

Pamela lives in Coaltown but is determined to make a better life for herself and refuses to date coal miners. After placing a personal ad in a magazine, she corresponds with Jim and meets him in New York: they fall in love but he doesn’t propose, and she sadly goes home. To her surprise, Jim is there: he’s a coal miner but kept it a secret from her. Pamela realises “love has no boundaries” and her “search for love is over.”
