Linda and her newly-rich family move to the ritzy South Bay area. Linda’s longtime friend Sam warns her that it’ll be difficult for her to be accepted into high society, but her father thinks money can buy anything. Linda falls for broker Ellsworth, even though he’s in love with secretary Mary. Ellsworth is swayed by Linda’s family money, but he goes back to Mary when Linda’s father is wiped out in the stock market. Linda goes to work as a waitress. Her father’s working class friends rally around and Linda reunites with Sam.

Nurse Vicky and her boyfriend Dr. Jim work at City Hospital. Rich Pamela is brought in after an auto accident. She takes a liking to Jim and her father offers to set him up in private practice. Jim turns down the offer but changes his mind when he runs afoul of the hospital bureaucracy. He’s soon treating rich women with nonexistent illnesses. When a patient experiences a crisis, Vicky finds Jim having dinner with Pamela at a swanky restaurant and asks for help. Jim responds but Pamela is irate. Jim saves the patient and gladly returns to City Hospital.

Amy’s father is injured in a mine accident, and she blames miner owner Daniel Hatch. Amy meets newcomer Dan at a party and they fall in love, but she learns he’s the son of the hated miner owner. Dan says he came to Coalville to improve the operation of the mines. Amy’s father and brothers forbid her to see Dan, and Dan’s mother opposes their romance as well. Dan and Amy are trapped in a mine cave-in; the town bands together to rescue them and Dan’s father says he’ll make sure the miners are safe from now on.
