The background is a collage of images. Panels 1, 4, and 5 are from the Superman origin story in Superman #1, page 2. Panel 2 is from Action Comics #5, page 4, panel 2. Panel 3 is also from Action Comics #5 but page 8, panel 3. The story from Action Comics #5 is not reprinted in this book but had recently (1965) been reprinted in Jules Feiffer's The Great Comics Book Heroes.

The main figure of Superman is taken from the back cover of Superman Annual #3. That figure is based on (but redrawn) from the Wayne Boring figure from the cover of Superman #53. This figure is also used on the spine of this book.

In the Original Edition of this book, this sequence is text-only; just saying that Superman's first appearance was in Action Comics #1. But in the Bonanza Books edition, it not only says that, but reprints the cover of Action Comics #1 (in black and white).

In Alter Ego #56 (Feb. 2006), in an interview with Adler, he reports that he painted the colors on the engraving plates for this story.

Error Report #2990 by Mike DeLisa states the following: "Cover was not by Shuster, actually by unknown member of DC staff based on one interior panel. Coloring was not by Jack Adler; Adler states that the work was done by DC staff. My source is the Court record and decision, which includes affidavits from Siegel, Shuster, and Adler."
