This story is continued in Marvel's Space-Born Superhero! Captain Marvel (Marvel, 1968 series) #1 (May 1968).
Captain Mar-Vell conveniently steals the identity of collateral casualty, physicist Dr. Walter Lawson, just assigned to the military base! He thus acquires his first covert identity. Lawson has no background otherwise. A plot from Lawson's past emerges in Captain Marvel #9 under Arnold Drake.
The feature character is still only called Mar-Vell in balloons (pages 6, 7, 9, 10, 13, 14, 19) and by the narrator (pages 11, 12), who also identifies him as a space officer (pages 11, 20).
