Synopsis:
Manteo, a Croatan, and Wanchese, a Roanoke, narrate the history of the lost Colony of Roanoke. Sir Walter Raleigh is granted a patent to found an English colony, but ignores the more hospitable Chesapeake Bay in favor of a colony on Roanoke Island, not far from Spanish shipping lanes, hoping it would make a good base for privateering. Poorly located, without a decent harbor, and managed by governors who develop poor relations with the natives, the first colony fails within a year. A second colony is immediately established, but three years later is found to have completely disappeared.

Explores the background leading up to the establishment of the Roanoke colony, including the life style and politics of the pre-colonial natives, and the establishment, failure, re-establishment, and disappearance of the colony itself, from c. 1585-1625. The fate of the colonists is unknown. Several theories, some fanciful, are presented.
