In the impact crater is a young boy with no memory. He absorbs D. J.'s language by touch, goes home with him, and eventually remembers that his name is Hilo. D. J. gives him food and clothing, both of which seem new to him. Hilo dreams of hopelessly fighting a monster called Razorwark, and being very afraid. He hacks school records to get enrolled in D. J.'s classes, where they discover that after three years, Gina has returned to school.

Sensing trouble, Hilo rushes to the site of another impact, where he is confronted by a giant robot. Memory returns as he flies and uses lasers to protect his friends. But the RANT keeps reassembling itself, repeatedly hammering Hilo until D. J. pushes it off a cliff to its destruction. Rushing to Hilo's side, D. J. and Gina discover that Hilo too is a robot, and that he's been dismantled in the combat.

Hilo reassembles himself, and remembers that in his old home he had been battling Razorwark, who wanted to hurt Hilo's friends. They return to D. J.'s home for a frantic meal with D. J.'s high-achieving family. D. J. sadly tells Gina that just as he doesn't fit in with his family, or with Hilo, he doesn't fit in with her. She and all the others are outstanding in various ways, while he is only boring and ordinary.

J. and Gina to safety, then attacks despite his fears. Destroying the robots, he returns to his own world, once again to face Razorwark.
