This story was first told in issue #11 (October 1950), several details are changed. The setting is changed to Abiline, Wyoming from "Purgatory" and the name of Dan Colt's ranch is changed. Rather than being killed by two corrupt lawmen, Colt's father is killed by a local tough, though he is named "Lash Larribee" in both versions.

This version of Kid Colt's origin is retold in Gunsmoke Western (Marvel, 1955 series) #72 (September 1962).
