As Hubie's family is taking the train to the 1939 New York World's Fair, his brother sneers that Hubie will need someone to hold his hand. The friendly conductor helps him but he falls off in the desert and meets a man with a handcar, then rides a freight with the engineer. He gets lost in a sandstorm that has also grounded Betty Beagle, the famed aviatrix. She flies him to New York where he parachutes right onto the Perisphere to meet his family.
