Synopsis: Disregarding her orders, Abba Kharkova leads Mouse (now a pilot herself) on an attack far behind German lines. When her engine dies she is shot down, gravely wounded, and dumped into a P.O.W. camp. Flight-Lieutenant Cohen, P.O.W. and former medical student, saves her life and sets her on the road to recovery. When the Germans massacre the Russian prisoners, he sacrifices himself to shield her. When Russian tanks arrive she assumes she is liberated, but instead she is beaten and imprisoned, on Stalin's orders that anyone taken captive is a traitor.

Synopsis: Anna is brought before a tribunal whipped up by Merkulov, who hates her since his own display of cowardice before Kursk. Mouse, now a major and a Hero of the Soviet Union, intervenes, but uses up all her influence in doing so, and both of their careers are dead-ended. When Merkulov announces that they will be discharged Anna makes an unauthorized flight in a fighter jet and shoots down an American over Korea. Not only is Anna beaten and imprisoned, but Mouse is too.

Synopsis: Anna and Mouse spend years in a Siberian prison camp, where Mouse dies. Merkulov, who commands the camp, abuses Anna, but his obsession with her has stalled his career too. Fyodorvich, who covets Merkulov's job, tells Anna that an advanced experimental jet has been flown in, and that Merkulov is too lax on security measures. She steals the jet and flies toward America, wrecking what's left of Merkulov's career. But she's a Hero of the Soviet Union. Rather than defect with the airplane, she climbs ever higher, aiming at the sun.
