The feature was created at the instance of publisher Martin Goodman to secure the name Captain Marvel away from the competition. The appropriation occurred in three steps: Marvel Super-Heroes featuring Captain Marvel (December 1967), then Marvel's Space-Born Superhero! Captain Marvel #1 (May 1968), then Captain Marvel #7 (November 1968). In the introduction to the fifth volume, Roy Thomas informs us that a TV producer wanted a science-fictional hero named Captain Marvel to develop as a TV animation series.

Nevertheless contrastingly with the feature name, the narrative voice calls the character "Captain Mar-Vell" and that's the character's official name.

This feature shows influence by the TV series Star Trek (1966-1969) and The Invaders (1967-1968). Accordingly with the main character's status as an alien spy, the green color of his spaceman costume was typically associated in this era with super-villains and threats to the human race.

Captain Mar-Vell (steals the identity of Dr. Walter Lawson); Medic Una; Jeremy Logan; Carol Danvers (introduction); General Bridges; Dr. Walter Lawson (death); Sentry #459; Colonel Yon-Rogg
Colonel Yon-Rogg continues to plot against Mar-Vell, launching a secret attack that kills bystander Walter Lawson. Taking advantage of the situation, Mar-Vell assumes Lawson's identity and his new job at the nearby military base so that the Kree can continue their plans for the conquest of Earth. Later, he is surprised to find that the military has discovered an inert Kree Sentry, which is reactivated by Yon-Rogg and threatens to destroy the base.

Captain Mar-Vell conveniently steals the identity of collateral casualty, physician Dr. Walter Lawson, just assigned to the military base! He thus acquires his first covert identity. Lawson has no background otherwise. A plot from Lawson's past emerges in Captain Marvel #9 under Arnold Drake.
The feature character is still only called Mar-Vell in balloons (pages 6, 7, 9, 10, 13, 14, 19) and by the narrator (pages 11, 12), who also identifies him as a space officer (pages 11, 20).

Briefs are now visible on the costume but they're still white.

This issue is the first where "Captain Marvel" is used. It is used by humans misunderstanding the character's name as a superhero name when he orders the Kree Sentry to stand down: by a soldier page 3 ("I just heard this masked man say his name was Captain Marvel"), and page 5 ("C'mon! Let's give that guy Marvel a hand!"), and Carol Danvers page 13 ("I sneaked close to get a good look at that Captain Marvel--", "Hurry! Captain Marvel!").
Mar-Vell doesn't correct them to keep undercover even though he appeared in his Kree uniform, thus potentially revealing his extraterrestrial origin. "Captain Marvel" becomes his second cover identity.
The narrator (pages 3, 6, 10), Mar-Vell ("I am Captain Mar-Vell" page 2), the Sentry (pages 5, 9, 18), Yon-Rogg (pages 7, 20), Una (pages 7-8) only use the name Mar-Vell.

Super-Skrull is hyphenated at the beginning of the story only, then is spelled without hyphen.
The narrator refers to the feature character as Mar-Vell (pages 8, 15, 20), as do Dorrek, Super-Skrull and Yon-Rogg (pages 4, 5, 12, 16, 18-20). A soldier, General Bridges and Carol Danvers say "Captain Marvel" (pages 16, 19-20).
Mar-Vell starts to refer to his two covert identities: "It is time for Captain Marvel to vanish... so that Dr. Walt Lawson can make an appearance back at the Cape!" (page 5), "This potion is a constant reminder of how vulnerable is the one the Earthmen call... Captain Marvel!" (page 6), "Now to resume my identity as Walt Lawson. No one must wonder why he failed to appear... when Captain Marvel did!" (page 7).
Oddly, the Super-Skrull's thought balloon page 16 reads, "...after I defeat Captain Marvel!"
