Synopsis: Story opens with a short history of the role of America in the first world war, then focuses on Haley and Wilson, two bickering Americans. The French can make no sense of these Americans who fight among themselves. Wilson joins the next patrol to take a sign into no man's land. Haley says the sign was his idea. The patrol gets pinned down, and Haley leads a group of American volunteers to relieve them. The French realize that the Americans are so keen on fighting they will even fight among themselves. The sign reads: "This is no longer no man's land[;] it's Yankee Land."
