Alpha Flight travels to the realm of the Great Beasts in order to recover Walter Langkowski's soul. They succeed in defeating Somon and his cohorts but, when they return to Earth with Walter's essence, they find his physical body has crumbled. The soul of Walter is placed into the Box robot. With the Great Beasts vanquished, Snowbird lets Alpha Flight believe that she has left the realm of Earth when she has really decided to settle down with her love, Doug Thompson.

Most of Alpha Flight captured by Omega Flight at the Edmonton Mall, Shaman, Aurora & Box ride in to the rescue. Snowbird also leaves Doug to help her friends. The remainder of Alpha Flight learns too late that Guardian is really an evil robot as the villain snatches Shaman's medicine pouch & roots around inside for Smart Alec. Things get worse when Guardian turns the medicine pouch inside out which unleashes magical forces which threaten to destroy the world. Talisman is able to use her abilities to contain the madness but Shaman fails to rescue her & she is pulled into the pouch.

Omega Flight tries to escape from their encounter with Alpha Flight but run into Madison Jeffries in the parking lot of the mall and he dispatches them singlehandedly. The Beyonder has rescued Talisman from Shaman's medicine pouch (in Secret Wars II #4), but Elizabeth is really angry with her father and magically sends the team back to their base without her. Roger Bochs "hooks" what looks to be a more suitable body for Walter than the Box robot but, unfortunately, the body already belongs to the incredible Hulk.

Hulk is trying to do away with himself in the dimensional crossroads where he is trapped when he is tagged in the back by a mysterious force. Unable to shake the line, the Hulk's body is possessed by Walter Langkowski who explains that Alpha Flight is trying to find him a new body in another dimension. The displaced spirit of Bruce Banner agrees to let Walter have his body but, touched by the sacrifice, Walter refuses and leaves the Hulk. Banner is sucked into the Hulk's body once again and his body is pulled back to Earth by Alpha Flight.

Finding this to be unfulfilling, he releases her from his control and abandons his quest.
