Hellboy apareció por primera vez en el San Diego Comic-Con Comics (Dark Horse, 1992 series) #2 (Agosto de 1993), la cual se hizo como promoción de esta miniserie. Aparte, el personaje apareció, a mano de Mignola, en John Byrne's Next Men (Dark Horse, 1992 series) #21 (Diciembre de 1993) como un personaje ficticio unos pocos meses antes de publicarse la miniserie.

La última página una hoja del Ministerio de Defensa e Investigación Paranormal donde los oficiales Nazis son identificados, presentando un dossier del Proyecto Ragna Rok. El el nombre del Dr. Manning se desvelará en una miniserie futura.
