An American-South Korean patrol comes upon a group of massacred soldiers, all with their hands tied behind their backs with their own shoelaces and shot down. There is one who is still alive and he tells the sergeant what had happened: A North Korean officer had the sergeant's men shot, then stripped of uniforms, which were then donned by the enemy troops. Unfortunately for them, they ran across a band of North Koreans who mistook them for Americans and killed them all.

Much of the story is told in flashback.

Colors were previously attributed to Marie Severin, but it is unlikely that Severin had begun coloring at EC when this issue was colored (Cassell 2012, 33–34 and 171).

Private Albert "Duck-Butt" Smith (death); Sergeant Purvis; U.S. soldiers [Cibelli (cameo, death); Hawkins (cameo, death); Green (cameo, death); rest unnamed] (many die); General Dwight D. Eisenhower (unnamed, cameo); The Nazis (villains, many die)
During the D-Day invasion in June of 1944, one Pvt. Smith, often considered by his sergeant to be a coward, engaged himself in many battles during the campaign, including a battle in which he held off the Germans while the sergeant was supposed to blow a bridge over which the enemy would attack. A Tiger tank, able to cross the bridge because it was not destroyed, killed the young private while the sergeant became a victim of battle fatigue and didn't complete his mission.

Story occurs in the 18th Century.

Marie Severin’s statement that “[Harvey] Kurtzman colored his own art, especially on covers...” (see Indexer Notes for this issue’s cover) suggests that Kurtzman colored stories that he drew, albeit perhaps less consistently than he colored his cover art.
