Ned Whitmore, the drummer boy, was Lt. Dan Foley's personal responsibility in a way, because Dan had formed the Fifth Cavalry regimental band and was responsible -- the colonel warned -- for all the noise it made, as well as for everyone in it!
The 5th's Drummer Boy is lousy and spoiling the band's music. He resents drumming and wants to fight. Lt Foley orders he practice outside the fort - where he hears Indians discuss the Attack and Retreat drum signals! As the Sioux swoop in, the drummer imitates their Retreat signal. Lt Foley rescues the drummer boy with fists and sabers, and the Sioux flee. And Lt Foley finally gets his music band to sound great - thanks to the "new" drummer boy.
