The Panther spirit, angered that T'Challa is doing nothing to stop the apartheid actions of the country of Azania, leaves T'Challa and enters the body of a tortured Azanian transforming him into a powerful "Man-Cat". The Man-Cat goes on a rampage killing members of the Azanian apartheid authorities. The Azanians think that T'Challa himself is behind the attacks. Without the Panther spirit, T'Challa begins to lose the confidence of the Wakandan people.

The Man-Cat's continuing attacks against the apartheid Azanian government emboldens the Azanians, thinking the Black Panther is behind the attacks, to revolt. The Azanian government brutally puts down the revolt. T'Challa survives a challenged to his leadership of Wakanda. Azanian general Magnus Moorbecx sends the Supremacists to kill T'Challa, but even without the power of the Panther spirit he is able to single-handedly defeat the group.

T'Challa battles and defeats the Man-Cat, the living embodiment of the Panther-spirit, to prove his worthiness as leader of Wakanda. The Azanian government orders an immediate cease-fire and begins the process of ending their policy of apartheid.
