The "Kirward Derby" appeared in the original Rocky and Bullwinkle show in an episode called Missouri Mish Mash. The name is a twist of "Durward Kirby", the name of a co-host of the "Candid Camera" television show. The story prompted a letter from Durward Kirby's attorney threatening a lawsuit.
