Corporal Patrick Tubridy (member of Her Majesty's Army in India); Private Clements (Tubridy's barracks-mate); Maharajah Jungan (villain, leader of the DACOITS)
Corporal Tubridy sits and watches new recruits marching along the parade grounds with Private Clements, thinking of his mother, but also of the time when he was caught by the Maharajah's men, all robbers at heart, for bagging five of the Maharajah's peacocks. Forced to stay one week, Tubridy eventually was allowed to return to his home base, minus his rifle, which the Corporal vowed to get back.

war
Corporal Patrick Tubridy (former drummer of F Company); Lieutenant Farrar
Corporal Tubridy, of Her Majesty's Army in India, sat patiently watching new recruits engaging in bayonet drills after previously trying to teach them the proper use of the Martini rifle at the firing range the day before. Taking no more, he jumped to his feet, grabbed a bayoneted rifle and properly showed the raw recruits the Haymaker's Lift, which could lift an enemy soldier right off his feet. Then he began to relate one of his stories about his many campaigns in the service, including his story of drumming recall of his company during an attack.

war
unnamed London Daily Press editor (narrator); Sergeant Patrick Tubridy (Irish F Company soldier); Private Philip Belbin (Anglo-Indian soldier); Punda Rahbah (Gurkha soldier)
The editor of the London Daily Press ventures to the Hurrum Hills along the Afghan border to meet with Tubridy in his quarters to ask delicate questions regarding unguarded talk of a deserter in F Company, something that was rare in the colonial service. Tubridy spoke of a Private Belbin and his friend Punda, and a mission Belbin volunteered for: to locate and stop a lone "avenger of blood", who hacked people to death with his Afghan sword. Tubridy later took a company of men out and found the lone avenger dead and only Belbin's binoculars laying next to him.
