Thank you for inviting me, Ororo.
Dr. Doom has captured Arcade. In response, Miss Locke kidnaps the X-Men's loved ones in order to compel them to help rescue her boss. Xavier calls in Havok, Polaris and Iceman to assist. Storm, Wolverine, Colossus, Angel and Nightcrawler try to infiltrate Castle Doom (well, the temporary Castle Doom in upstate New York) while the rest head off to Murderworld. Storm is wined and dined by Victor while her comrades fight their way in. Arcade joins them, more as a guest than a prisoner. When Doom is attacked, he encases Storm in metal and then turns his attention on the rest of the team.

Dave Cockrum reports 2006 that "I did loose pencils in blue. Editor Ann Nocenti referred to them as 'shakedowns'. But everything was there." After being deposed from Latveria in Fantastic Four (Marvel, 1961 series) #200, Doom has set up shop in the medieval castle Toad was running as an amusement park in Marvel Team-Up (Marvel, 1972 series) #68.

Fascinating.
At Doom's castle, the captured X-Men are placed in deadly traps from which there is only one way of escape. Storm, who has been encased in metal, begins to freak out due to her claustrophobia and causes a massive storm outside. Meanwhile, Havok, Polaris, Iceman and Banshee are battling their way through Murderworld in a bid to free the X-Men's friends and family.

Two miles above the ground...
Wolverine, Nightcrawler, Colossus and Angel each escape from the deadly trap set for them by Dr. Doom. They confront the villain and Wolverine forces him to release Storm from the metal sheath in which her body has been encased. Storm, suffering from her extreme claustrophobia, emerges as a power mad goddess who starts ripping everything up with her elemental power. Her friends are able to talk her down and return her to normal. Dr. Doom, creep that he is, hits on Storm and she, surprisingly, doesn't completely shoot him down.

The credited colorist in this issue is Glynis Wein, but The Marvel Comics Index (Olshevsky 1981) says that the Wein credit was incorrect, and that the actual colorist was Warfield. The Official Marvel Index to the X-Men (Ward 1994) also credits Warfield. Official Index to the Marvel Universe (Vandal et al. 2009) records the Wein credit.

This cover may have been a last-minute replacement for one by Michael Golden. The Golden cover showed Rogue holding a defeated Thor and Iron Man above her head. The other Avengers are lying among debris on the ground. An image of Ms. Marvel partially covers the series title. Marvel editor-in-chief Jim Shooter's signature appears in a production box below the picture area on the original. In a November 23, 2011 comment on his website, Shooter wrote, "... at a glance, I'd guess that Golden's cover wasn't used because he didn't allow room for the contest banner at the top, which we were obligated to run. The cover that did run looks like it was cobbled together at the last minute. The Golden cover appears to have my signature on it, meaning I approved it. Maybe someone upstairs noticed that the contest banner was missing. But, I don't know for sure."
