Captain Rex Venture; Scotty Mackay; muckle serpent
Crashed on an unexplored, water-covered planet, Captain Rex Venture and his mechanic Scotty Mackay have salvaged only their small space-module and a hope of escape from the planet's eerie caverns!
Captain Venture and Scotty's space module has been swallowed by a "muckle serpent", a gigantic snake-like creature, which swiftly swallows Venture and Scotty as well. Inside the beast, they find the space module and use it to blast their way out of the snake's midsection, in a surprisingly gruesome event for a comic produced by Western Publishing. They land on a small island which is quickly beset by a fierce squall - which washes the space module out to see, leaving our heroes stranded.

Part of an ongoing serialized story.

Upon finding their space module inside the belly of the beastly serpent, Captain Venture and Scotty immediately get down to business:

VENTURE: "The problem now is how to get the module out!"
SCOTTY: "No problem, Rex! The module's own rocket blast will blow the beast apart!

CAPTION: "And so it does!"
SCOTTY: "Too much rocket!"
SOUND EFFECT: "BRRUMP!"

Artist Dan Spiegle intentionally tones-down/holds-back on the blood and guts, but it's still not something you'd see every day in a Gold Key Comic.
