'Are you two out of your minds?' I shout.
After learning that the Bodkins intend to escape from their world ("the Knot") to invade Byjovia, Mumblin disguises the remaining Midknights as the Dwarfs of Tresk so that they can infiltrate the Knot unnoticed. Nerelia gives Max a crystal for the mission.

When you belly-flop into something called a Pit of Doom, you're expecting a whole lot of nasty at the bottom -- iron spikes, deadly snakes, stuff like that.
The bodkins try to wring information from their captives. Since Max took the lead on the Midknights' first adventure, the bodkin king orders her killed.

Have you ever seen a person's head -- like your uncle's, for instance -- on the body of a giant bird of prey?
Budrick and Seymour rescue the Midknights from the quicksand. Max uses archery skills to steal the gem back, cutting off the portal before most of the bodkins get through. Seymour transforms the entire company into bees; carrying the gem, they fly at top speed toward the portal.
