Fermin, there is no one else but you and Garza, I swear-!
Maria is caught between the jealous rage of both Fermin and Garza, with the former leaving physical marks on her and the latter kicking her out. Peter enlists the dogged Señor Pito to find Luba, and he does so, fulfilling his mission, then dying. Maria leaves Peter, whereabouts unknown. Gorgo tracks her down, but then lets her leave to California. Peter falls hard for pre-sex change Isobel, but then marries Luba after acting on Pito's information. Catching up to the early seventies, the postpartum Luba wakes up, still in the hospital, and finds Peter next to her, babbling and catatonic.

The first story set in Palomar in almost four years, since issue number twenty-six. Changes of note since then- Luba is now mayor and pregnant again; Tito, a newborn previously is now ready to begin school; Sergio is fully grown; Khamo survived trying to save Tonantzin from her self-immolation but has severe burn scars.

Palomar is seen next in issue thirty-nine but only in a handful of panels. The next full Palomar story is the Be Bop a Luba one-pager in Ten Years of Love and Rockets (September 1992).

Pages numbered thirty-seven to forty-two.
