Subtle Startler: The migrating flock of ducks encounter the hurricane, thanks to William's careless leadership:

TEXT: "For hours, it seemed, the wind howled, thrusting the exhausted ducks before it. Then, finally, it was quiet, and the *SURVIVORS* [emphasis added] of the duck flock descended to get their bearings and rest." The word SURVIVORS indicates in a subtle manner that a number of the ducks were killed in this incident.
