The main cover illustration is a modified version of the final panel of the Smokey Stover Sunday strip appearing on interior page five of this issue. Cookie Stover at the far left is cut off, while the panel is extended to the right to include Spooky the Cat climbing the (originally out of frame) lamp base and singing "Inky dinky parlay foo". The extension is clearly not by Bill Holman, as neither Spooky, nor the "gloved lamp base" look wacky enough to pass for Holman's uniquely styled art. A Western staff artist appears to have drawn the added material for the cover.

A "Spooky" topper-strip appears (oddly) at the bottom of this cover. This Spooky strip serves as visual evidence that the cover illustration of the cat (above) was not drawn by Holman.

The 1949 copyright registration says the new material is an illustration by Daniel Gormley.
