Synopsis: Usagi helps a village shore up a dike to protect them from a flood. When bandits rob the villagers' food, Usagi tracks the bandits but discover they're little more than a mob of hungry beggars. Usagi forces the bandits to return the food and help the villagers complete the task. The village is saved from the flood and the bandits are allowed to assimilate into the community. One year later, one of the bandits has had a child with one of the villagers.

Synopsis: As Usagi struggles to shore up the village from being flooded, he sees a Kappa attack and kill one of the villagers. Pursuing the creature, Usagi finds a female Kappa and her infant child, but she is peaceful and identifies the killer as a renegade Kappa. Usagi and the female Kappa bait a trap for the renegade using cucumbers, but during the fight the renegade breaks Usagi's sword arm. The female Kappa defeats the renegade and banishes him, then heals Usagi's wound.

Synopsis: Usagi saves the life of the Komori ninja Kazehime during a storm and she places herself in his debt. Later, Usagi agrees to help Yamaguchi and other swordsmen in guarding Merchant Wada, but en route Usagi learns Wada is an enemy of Lord Hikiji. Suddenly, the Komori attack the party and nearly all are killed; the last Komori is Kazehime who offers to spare Usagi, but Usagi refuses to abandon Wada. Kazehime is about to kill Usagi but hesitates, enabling Yamaguchi to strike her down.

Although Ishida vouches for Usagi, Usagi offers to guard the next evening. As he patrols the grounds, Usagi is watched from afar by the hidden killer.

Synopsis: Hasano reveals himself to be the killer when he assaults Usagi, revealing himself to be a former samurai who went into hiding at the shrine in the hopes of locating its hidden treasures. Ishida fends off Toshi, who was likewise once a soldier under Hasano's command, while Hasano is fatally wounded by Usagi. Hasano is stunned when their fight damages the Hell Screen, revealing it concealed a hidden storehouse of treasure. Hasano dies and Lord Shima hopes to claim all the land, but the rediscovered treasures convince Ishida to let the shrine remain.

Synopsis: Usagi meets Ichiro, who is carrying his aged mother on his back to see his father. Usagi defends the pair from bandits and accompanies them on their trip, even bearing Ichiro's mother on his back as they climb Mount Hurai. With Ichiro unable to complete the climb, Usagi carries the mother alone and discovers her husband is dead and she has chosen to die so that her family will have enough food during the current famine. Unable to dissaude her, Usagi leaves the woman atop Mount Hurai.
