Blackheart describes how he and Goldenloin were friends until he defeated Goldenloin in a joust. Immediately afterward the jealous Goldenloin severed Blackheart's right arm in what Goldenloin has always insisted was an accident. The Institution training them selected Goldenloin as its new hero. Rejected as a hero, Blackheart made the obvious opposite choice.

She has also shown a startling ruthlessness in dealing with the guards.

He has grave doubts about Nimona's origin story, but still joins her in watching her favorite zombie movie.

Panic spreads along with illness from Blackheart's toxin, and all bank accounts are frozen after Blackheart's heist. Goldenloin pleads for a private meeting, at which he warns of the death sentence against Nimona and begs Blackheart to send her away. Blackheart refuses and provokes a fight... which he wins... by challenging Goldenloin's understanding of their history, of the nature of the Institution, and of Goldenloin's role as a hero. Even so, he harbors deep unspoken doubts about Nimona.

Nimona's powers are hampered at the fair, enraging her but suggesting that there may be validity to Blitzmeyer's theory.

The Institution stages a tourney as a trap for Blackheart, but he uses it to raise a rebellion. Goldenloin and the guards capture Blackheart and behead Nimona, but she restores herself and frees them both. The wounded Goldenloin tells the director that Nimona is not a little girl disguised as a monster; she's a monster disguised as a little girl. The director tells Goldenloin that he's being replaced.

Blackheart challenges Nimona's story of her origins, which leads her to break with him. As he enters the hospital by stealth, to administer cures for his toxin, he is captured and placed under guard of the demoted Goldenloin, who finally confesses that he had destroyed Blackheart's arm on purpose. The Institution captures Nimona in order to use her for reasearch, but she breaks out and goes on a rampage of death and destruction, killing even the king. Blackheart warns that Goldenloin cannot confront Nimona and survive, but insists that he may have a means of capturing her.

Nimona escapes by becoming a fire-breathing monster AND a small girl. She slays the director as a flashback reveals her TRUE origin -- given away once her power manifested, and experimented on in the Institution. Knowing that at least one person that he loves will die when Nimona and Goldenloin fight, Blackheart uses the green energy to hamper Nimona's power and rescues her small-child manifestation. As she angrily refuses to leave her monstrous self, Blackheart carries Goldenloin to safety before a huge explosion. As he sits by Goldenloin's sickbed Nimona reveals herself, then slips away.
