MUMMY MOVIE REFERENCES: Character names reflect those, or the names of the actors themselves, from Universal's "The Mummy" (1932) and "The Mummy's Hand" (1940).
David Manners was the third billed actor, behind Boris Karloff and Zita Johann, in "The Mummy" (1932). Manners played a character named "Frank Whemple" - Whemple being another name used in this story. The story's "David Manners" was the museum guard who discovers the walking mummy.
In the same film, actor Arthur Byron played a character named "Sir Joseph Whemple". In this story, "Sir Wemple" is the name of the museum curator.
Steve Banning was the lead character in the sequel to "The Mummy" (1932), "The Mummy's Hand" (1940), played by actor Dick Foran. Foran briefly reprised his role as Steve Banning in the following film, "The Mummy's Tomb" (1942), before succumbing to the vengeful titular mummy. In this story, "Steve Banning" is the name of a second museum guard.
