Synopsis: Cathy returns after being away for three years and meets her childhood friend at the rental car company. He had once proposed to her, but now he is a husband and father. Realizing everything had changed, she decides to leave. When he drives off after dropping her off at the train station she starts hitch-hiking to Calais, glad that he doesn't know the truth. She had used her savings to return in grand style and he thinks she is a model. Instead she has been moving from job to job, living in a shabby little room.

Synopsis: Cathy notices a girl staring at her and Benoît as they lounge under a tree. He initially ignores her, but when the girl greets him, it is obvious they know each other. Benoît quickly tells Francine they must leave and he later tells Cathy how he knew her. Francine had been his brother's fiance and Benoît had been wallpapering his brother's future apartment. Attempting to take curtain measurements, Francine stumbled on a ladder. Benoît caught her in his arms and in an unexpected moment of passion, they kissed. Embarrassed by their behavior, Benoît took the train that led him to meet Cathy.

While riding one day, her horse bolts and she is rescued by a man who owns the neighboring farm. But Dick and her uncle are enemies, and her uncle claims he is the leader of the 'wreckers'.
