You're lieutenant Tom Pomeroy.
Having just joined the 37th "Blue Blazes" Aero Squadron, Lt. Pomeroy is standing on the grassy field called "Bar Sur Seine", awaiting the return on squadron planes after their encounter with German aircraft. However, squadron members give Pomeroy the cold shoulder and later learns that older squadron members are highly suspicious of "newbies" in their unit. But one day, as he returns to base, he sees a fleet of Fokkers machine gunning the field, so he goes on the attack and successfully downs half the enemy fleet and causing the rest to turn and flee. From that moment on, he is accepted.

World War 1 pilots [Mark Madison; Lt. Joe Lane (death); Ed; Art; Mike]; Prop (squadron dog mascot); Germans (villains, many die)
It was a bleak winter day in 1918.
A new recruit to the squadron, Lane, is given the facts about the mascot for the group: a dog that sits on the runway when the unit takes off and remains there until all have returned. If a pilot is overdue, and the dog senses he will return, he maintains his place on the runway. In effect, the dog has become a barometer of life and death.
