In 1826 on 9 October Charles Tilt started a lucrative publishing and bookselling business at 86 Fleet Street, at the corner of St Bride's Passage or Avenue. David Bogue came to London from Scotland in 1836 and worked as the shop assistant. In 1840-1843, partnership, trading as Tilt & Bogue; succeeded by David Bogue in 1843 (purchasing the firm for about £50,000). His chief success was as Cruikshank's principal publisher, but his rival H. G. Bohn imitated many of his ventures and from the 1840s the business declined. When David Bogue died in 1856 at the age of 48, Tilt came back long enough to manage his estate and sell off the assets to Kent and Co and from there it passed to Bohn.
