After the death of Mary's parents, she is sent to live with her largely-absent uncle in Manhattan, brought up by employees. She discovers a cousin she never knew existed; he is confined to his room due to panic attacks after the death of one of his fathers. The three children secretly bring the garden back to life. When Colin's dad returns and finds them in the garden, he is overjoyed at the garden and the children, and regrets hiding from both in his sorrow at his husband's unexpected death.
